The (Fiji) Environmental law Association (FELA) is an incorporated and independent association that aims to protect the environment and promote sustainable natural resource management through law.  FELA is a result driven, well run and financially responsible organisation that prides itself on the quality of its work.

From 2008, FELA has provided legal assistance to communities, NGOs and government departments, delivered community legal education programs, and has engaged in policy and law reform for environment related issues.  Amongst FELA’s notable successes have been its accredited continuing legal education program to qualified lawyers, and its delivery of legal services at a community level.  FELA is run by its experienced full time lawyer / coordinator and supported by an administrative assistant. FELA is guided by an active Executive Committee and has a large membership of professionals, students and community members. For more information about FELA please visit www.fela.org.fj

FELA seeks applications from a suitably qualified and dynamic lawyer to join its team.   

Specific Responsibilities:

Provide support to the Coordinator and contribute to the development and implementation of FELA’s strategic plan and program of works in collaboration with FELA members, government agencies, NGO partners and relevant stakeholders.
Investigate research and draft legal opinions on legal environmental issues and breaches.
Provide support to the delivery of FELA’s educational awareness program to the community.
Contribute to policy development and legislative review.
As required, represent FELA at national and international meetings; and contribute to the development and maintenance of local, national, and regional working relationships with key partners.
Report on project activities as required.
Draft project reports, articles and legal summaries using appropriate language for the FELA website, newsletter and other communication activities.
Assist in the implementation of FELA’s communications strategy and provide input into various communication initiatives.
Carry out other duties as required by the Coordinator and the FELA Board.

Requirements

A Law Degree and Admission to the Bar in Fiji.
A strong interest and knowledge of environmental law and issues at national, regional and international levels and or the ability to develop that knowledge or interest in the relevant field.
Sound understanding and ability to read and interpret law.
Excellent communication and drafting skills.
Good computer skills (Word, Xcel, PPT)

It is desirable that the applicant have:

         Experience in conducting policy and legal review.
         Experience in working with environmental projects and/or working with local communities.

 Salary will be commensurate with relevant experience or expertise.
