Vacancy for Senior legal officer

Fiji Environmental Law Association (FELA) seeks to recruit a highly motivated professional for the position of Senior Legal Officer.

The (Fiji) Environmental law Association (FELA) is an incorporated, independent and not-for-profit association that was established with the aim to protect the environment and promote sustainable natural resource management through law. FELA is a result driven, well run and financially responsible organisation that prides itself on the quality of its work.

Since 2008, FELA has engaged in policy and law reform relating to environmental and natural resources management, provided legal assistance to communities, NGOs and government departments and raised public legal awareness through publications and the delivery of community legal and education programs. Amongst FELA’s notable successes are its accredited continuing legal education program for practicing lawyers, and the delivery of legal services to communities. FELA is run by its experienced full time lawyer / coordinator and supported by an administrative assistant. Specific Responsibilities:

Provide support to the Coordinator and contribute to the development and implementation of FELA’s strategic plan and program of works in collaboration with FELA members, government agencies, NGO partners and relevant stakeholders.
Implement and grow FELA’s projects portfolio, including by drafting project proposals.
Undertake research and draft legal opinions on environmental legal issues and breaches.
Contribute to policy development and legislative review.

As required, represent FELA at national and international meetings; and contribute to the development and maintenance of local, national, and regional working relationships with key partners.
Provide support to the delivery of FELA’s educational awareness program to the community.
Report on project activities as required by FELA and donors.
Draft and publish project reports, articles and legal summaries using appropriate language for the FELA website and other communication activities.
Supervise and mentor interns and volunteers.
Assist in the implementation of FELA’s communications strategy and provide input into various communication initiatives.
Carry out other duties as required by the Coordinator and the FELA Board.

Essential requirements:

A Law Degree and preferably admission to the Bar in Fiji.
A strong interest in environmental, land and natural resources management issues
Knowledge and/or experience working on environmental and natural resources management law and policy issues at national, regional and international levels, or the ability to develop that knowledge in the relevant field.
Sound understanding and ability to read and interpret law.
Ability to carry out high quality legal research and legal drafting
A minimum of 3 years post-admission experience as a practising lawyer, or legal officer,  or legal policy officer, or in any position relevant to FELA’s work
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines
Good computer skills (Word, Xcel, PPT)

Desirable skills and experience:

Experience in conducting policy and legal reviews.
Experience in working with environmental projects and/or working with local communities.

·         Excellent standard of written and oral English, and preferably of a local language.



A competitive salary in the range of FJD$40,000 to $60,000 per annum inclusive of benefits.

The successful candidate will be offered a two-year contract, with a probation period of 3 months, and possibility of renewal subject to performance and funding.
